There has been quite a lot of interest in food from Peru recently, with fancy Peruvian restaurants opening up in many places around the world, including London, and a restaurant from Lima (Gaston y Astrid) being selected in the ‘The Worlds 50 Best Restaurants’. Peruvians, and Limeños in particular, have become evangelical about the quality of the food in Peru. Thanks to the wide variety of ingredients, including some of the best seafood in the world, hundreds of varieties of tubers, grains, multi-coloured corns and wide variety of tropical fruit, Peruvians have always eaten well. There are many excellent Creole dishes and also traditional pre-conquest food. However, it is in recent years that there has been an explosion in the quality of restaurants in Lima. Eating out has become a major pass-time for Limeños, and at lunch and dinner, restaurants are often fully booked.
Lima is no longer just a gateway to the highlands of Peru and the Inca sites, but a great place to spend a few days, not in a small part due to the pleasure of eating out there. When you visit, be sure to try the Peruvian national dish of ceviche (fish marinated in lime juice), anticuchos (skewered beef heart) and papa a la huancaina (potato with a peanut sauce). There are many picanterias (traditional restaurants), but it is in some of the newer restaurants that traditional ingredients and dishes have been combined with new cooking techniques that have given Lima’s restaurant scene a real buzz.
Of course, it is not just in Lima where you eat well, and there are some fantastic restaurants in Cusco and other cities, but most of the best restaurants in Peru are in Lima. Ask our reps in Lima for the latest recommendations, but below is a list of restaurants with a good reputation in Lima. Most of these are upmarket, and you should expect to spend around US$25 – $50 per person, or possibly more. Reservations are not always necessary, but are recommended.
